Pool Decks and Spa Surrounds

A pool deck is formed around the shape of the pool, so the deck and the water read as one piece of work rather than a slab with a hole in it. We form to the coping, pour, and finish to the texture you picked.

Two things decide whether a pool deck works, and both are settled before the pour rather than after. Water has to leave the deck instead of collecting in low spots against the shell, and the surface has to hold traction when it is wet while staying walkable barefoot through a valley summer.

Elevated Decks and Balconies

An elevated deck carries everything a patio does, plus the problem of what sits underneath it. Structure, slope, drainage, flashing and the coating system all have to work as one, because water that gets through the surface reaches framing.

So these are specified as a system rather than a finish. The waterproof deck coating is the part that keeps the structure dry, and it goes over a deck built to drain in the first place.

Resurfacing a Deck You Already Have

A worn deck does not always need removing. Where the slab underneath is stable and the damage is at the surface, an overlay gives it a new texture and color without a tear-out, and cracks get repaired as part of the preparation.

It is the wrong call when sections have dropped, lifted or separated. An overlay follows the slab beneath it, so covering concrete that is still moving buys you a season. We look first and tell you which of the two you are dealing with.

Deck Finishes

Broom finishes, textured overlays, stamped patterns, decorative borders and color. Around water a finish is a safety decision as much as a design one, so the texture and the sealer get picked for a surface that is expected to be wet.

Color matters more than people expect here. Lighter shades absorb less heat than charcoal or deep brown, which is the difference between a deck people cross barefoot in July and one they hop across. We will show you finished work before anything is poured.

Common questions about decks

Can you resurface my pool deck instead of replacing it?

Often, yes. If the slab is stable and the damage is at the surface, an overlay or coating gives you a new deck without the tear-out, and cracks get repaired during the preparation. If sections have settled or lifted, resurfacing hides the problem rather than fixing it, and we will tell you that instead of selling you the easier job.

Does a concrete pool deck get too hot to walk on?

Color does most of the work. Light grays, sand and cream absorb far less than charcoal or deep brown, and texture helps as well. Nothing stays cool in full afternoon sun, so shade still matters, but the finish you pick makes a real difference underfoot.

Is a concrete deck slippery when wet?

It can be if it is finished too smooth or sealed with the wrong product. A pool deck is expected to be wet, so we build texture into the finish and pick a sealer suited to wet areas. The aim is traction that is still comfortable on bare feet, not a surface that is rough to stand on.

Do elevated decks and balconies need waterproofing?

Where there is living space or framing underneath, yes. The concrete surface on its own is not a water barrier. Those decks get a coating system over a surface built to drain, which we handle under repairs and deck waterproofing.
